I'm Ahnaaf Hassan, and I'm running to be your next TDSB Trustee for Scarborough Southwest and Beaches–East York. Over the past year, the TDSB has seen changes affecting students in every way. From classroom supply accessibility and getting rid of classroom size caps, to the continuous underfunding of special education, $6.4 million cut in the coming year, we are seeing education get continuously less accessible.
As a Trustee candidate, my goal is to make classrooms a space where student achievement doesn't come second to funding. For educators and staff, this means schools with properly funded programs and resources, so nothing comes out of their pockets.
The platform
The restructuring of the Model Schools in Inner Cities Program means that under-serviced communities are not getting the supports they need right now. As someone who's gone to Model Schools all their life, I know the impact the program has on students. If elected, my goal is to not only bring back equitable school funding models, but add more to it, so schools that need more, get more. This isn't about defunding other schools, it's about prioritizing needs of students.
Student nutrition is a crucial part of how students thrive at school. With the mayor's recent goals to improve it, the system is continuing to improve. If elected, my goal is to make sure all students receive a standard of care through the food and nutrition program, whether that be expanding what's currently available, or starting new initiatives.
Not every student has the same learning needs, and we can't treat them like they do. This means having support staff students can rely on, and dedicated resources for students to thrive, regardless of their learning ability. TDSB's recent cuts to special education funding, at a time when special education funding was low, only goes to show just how undervalued special education support is. Reinvesting in students that need more assistance is crucial in making sure we're providing a fair education for all.
Election day
Canadian citizens, 18 or older, who live in Ward 10 and are on the voters' list as a supporter of the public school system.
Election day is October 26, 2026. Advanced voting is Tuesday, October 6th to Sunday, October 11th from 10am to 7pm.
